On the same day that Tropical Storm Hanna hit the Washington region, the Washington Post published an article about a green roof that has been installed on a gas station in Northwest. In the entire article, “In a Prettified City, Urban Grime Gives Rise to Green“ there is not a single mention of the benefit a green roof provides in reducing impervious surface area and controlling stormwater runoff, the major water quality issue in the Washington D.C. region. Instead the article presents the green roof as part of “a suburban-style play pen for the wealthy.”
Better strategies are needed for the public to learn about the harm to streams, rivers, and the Bay done by uncontrolled stormwater in our region.
USA Today had a article yesterday on green business, Cities Cultivate 2 Types of Green. An example of this here in the Washington, D.C. area is D.C. Greenworks, a nonprofit which provides full-service greenroof design, installation, and consulting.
