Turkey Branch Spring 2010 Update

Friday, May 28th, 2010

What a difference a year makes when the County, watershed groups and the communities work together to protect our natural areas. A year ago Matthew Henson Park and Turkey Branch, a tributary of Rock Creek, were trashed. The County had spent millions of dollars in restoring Turkey Branch (see write up), but the stream and park was full of tires, car batteries, construction debris and litter (link to Spring 2009 Update) . Last spring we pulled tons of trash from the park and stream. Follow up clean ups were organized in the fall and during Volunteer Day on January 20th.

Community organizers, supported by Friends of Rock Creek Environment (FORCE) and the Parks Volunteer Office (Lynn Vismara!) have started turning the Park around. Challenges remain, but steady progress is being made.

First Anacostia Business Summit

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Yesterday the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District and Anacostia Watershed Restoration Partnership co-hosted the first ever Anacostia Business Summit near the Navy Yard Metro.  A major summit goal was to highlight, explain, and promote the recently released Army Corps of Engineer’s Anacostia Restoration Plan to the business community.  Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton described how she was motivated by her interest in Anacostia restoration to have the Water Resources Development Act of 2007 include Section 5060, authorizing the Army Corps to create this 10 year plan.

GreenWheaton Demonstration Conservation Landscaping Project

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

On April 29, 2010, we kicked off the GreenWheaton demonstration conservation landscaping project at Parking Lot 13 in downtown Wheaton.  The intent is to install an environmentally friendly garden that not only looks beautiful, but also provides environmental services.   As a demonstration garden, we hope the business community and homeowners can learn what they can do at their businesses and homes to help the environment and enhance the community.  In this project the demonstration conservation garden is designed to cleanse polluted stormwater runoff and provide habitat for pollinators.  One of the goals of GreenWheaton is to have many sustainable gardens, greenroofs and trees throughout Wheaton.

Pine Crest Elementary School, RainScapes for Schools

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Pine Crest Elementary school recently earned the distinction of becoming the first RainScapes School.  This designation was made possible by a partnership with the school’s “green” club, the Woodmoor Green Team, and local Girl Scout Troops.  The process began with a site evaluation/survey of the school grounds.  The implementation team identifies and documents the location of stormdrains on the site and water sources. A rain garden appeared to be feasible in the front of the school where many people will get to see the garden.
